If there’s one perfect moment to update your home, it’s at the start of a new decade. After 10 years of the same old, same old, now is the time to roll on one of the top paint colors, refresh the heart of your home with one of our favorite kitchen ideas, or simply add a new piece of art to your gallery wall. And if you want to make a serious statement this year, then try incorporating one of the hottest home décor trends of 2020.

To find the home ideas that are about to be everywhere, we went straight to our favorite interior design pros. From navy paint and floral wallpaper to colored cabinets and free-standing tubs, these are the 2020 home decor trends that experts can’t wait to see. Whether you love trends or will typically go to great lengths to avoid them, there are bound to be a few ideas on our list that you’ll adore (and will continue to adore into the next decade).

VINTAGE ACCENTS

What goes around comes around — especially when it comes to home décor trends. One thing we’re starting to see is more of a nod to vintage and traditional detailing — things like spooled legs, spindles, and other things we saw in furnishings from the 1800s and early 1900s. But don’t expect to see all vintage everywhere. This time around, designers are incorporating just one or two statement pieces.

NAVY BLUE

The 2020 Pantone Color of the Year is Classic Blue (a navy shade), which means you can expect to see a lot of the color in the new year. Fortunately, it’s totally versatile and sophisticated.

Navy blue provides the perfect amount of contrast for interiors and exteriors in both traditional and modern home styles. Whether a kitchen island gets a quick upgrade or a room gets a dramatic new look with contrasting white trim and woodwork, the shade provides a stately look without going completely black.

FLORAL WALLPAPER

If the thought of flower-power wallpaper makes you flinch, then 2020 might just be the year you change your tune. Floral wallpaper has been around for years and you will continue to see the pretty pattern but with a much more modern update. Large scale, bold color, and even metallic versions are here to stay.

There is a particularly good choice in powder bathrooms and foyers. Plus, there are tons of stick-on options if you’re not ready to fully commit.

HIGH-CONTRAST DECOR

High-contrast designs are currently having a moment — which means if you’ve always wanted to paint your home black, now is the time to give it a whirl (in moderation, of course).

For a long time, it was white, white, white. But now, for example, maybe we’d see a chair with black fabric and a white frame. Or a console table in a dark stained wood with light-colored hardware.

NON WHITE KITCHENS

If there was one defining design trend of the 2010s, it was the all-white kitchen. But in 2020, designers predict there’ll be a shift toward spaces that go beyond just white. For example, Hammel expects to see more natural wood cabinets, islands, and shelves — all of which allow homeowners to keep a bright and airy vibe without restricting themselves to all-white-everything.

COLOR-POP CABINETS

If you really want to leave the all-white kitchen trend behind, opt for another 2020 home décor trend: colored cabinets. The trend in 2020 is to choose one or several elements, like the kitchen island, kitchen wall cabinets, or base cabinets in daring colors, like dark red, bright yellow, green or navy blue.

Crown Molding – Details Matter

Crown molding has a way of making a room look complete or finished; it brings the ceiling and the walls together, giving them an elegant appearance. Without this finishing touch, rooms tend to look cheap or unfinished.

Fortunately, crown molding is relatively inexpensive (especially the plastic, paintable versions), making it affordable on almost any budget. There are many widths to choose from, but if you want a greater impact, chose the widest trim that your budget will allow.  For the ultimate in glamour, try adding all types on molding to your home, i.e. crown, high baseboard, ceiling beams, columns, ceiling medallions, chair rails etc…

Paint – Color Matters

Paint color is perhaps one of the most difficult decisions to make when decorating a room, especially when the remaining décor will be based off the color palette. However, if elegance is what you are after, there are certain colors that add instant glamour to your home.

Choose one of these two color options—bold and dramatic OR soft, understated hues. These hues allow you to add instant elegance to your home. It simply depends on your color personality in terms of which option you choose.

Painting interior doors black is another great idea. It automatically creates an expensive feeling, without causing much damage to your wallet. If you choose this option, however, be sure to add some black accessories to the space to tie the overall design together.

Pillows – Comfort & Elegance

Pillows throughout your home serve two purposes. One, if they are chosen correctly, they can really punch-up the elegance factor. Two, they provide your guests with a little extra comfort on the couch, and offer a cozy, layered feeling to your rooms.

The comfort aspect speaks for itself, that is, if you choose pillows that are large enough to rest on, and soft. Speaking of size, you want to avoid the standard 12 to 18 inches for a throw pillow. Instead, choose something larger, such as a 22-inch pillow cover stuffed with 24-inch inserts.

Large, overstuffed pillows create a very plush, elegant appearance—and don’t skimp on the pillow inserts, down-filled is the only way to go.

Window Treatments – A Must-Have Accessory

It’s simple—a home without window treatmentswill look unfinished and cheap. Fortunately, window treatments are one of the most budget-friendly ways to add some elegance to your home, as well as much-needed privacy.

When selecting window treatments you want to make smart choices. For instance, choosing unlined flimsy materials look terribly cheap, even if they are the least expensive option. It is recommended that you avoid see-through materials. This does not mean that you can’t buy off-the-rack curtains. A lot of chain stores offer lined draperies that appear elegant and expensive —even though the price is right.When it comes to window treatments stick with elegant materials such as natural silk, linen and cotton (polyester or man-made fabrics usually look cheap). If draperies are not for you, then try woven bamboo shades or wood blinds. Just be sure to dress your windows—they ensure your home looks elegant and well-designed.

Top design trends of 2020

As we prepare to enter not only a new year but a fresh decade, you may be wondering what design trends lie on the horizon. To find out, we polled five trend forecasters who are constantly looking at data and analyzing market shifts to identify what’s new and next.According to these experts, if the last few years were defined by sweet pinks and brass fixtures, 2020 will shift into a slightly more subdued gear. But this reinterpretation of minimalism will be anything but boring: The next year will see a return to strong geometric forms (as one forecaster called it, “Neo-Deco”) as well as surprising interpretations of neutral hues.

AMPED UP NEUTRALS

Following several years dominated by exuberant colors, 2020 will bring a more subdued approach. We see a transition into gorgeous warm neutrals that cleanse the palate and hint at the reemergence of tradition. Neutrals that are often relegated to the background—off-whites, tinted grays, earthy ochres, and tactile beiges—will instead step to the fore, continuing that reconnection with nature and authenticity.

JAPANESE INFLUENCES

Given the trend toward soothing minimalism, it’s no surprise that the Japanese aesthetic will be a strong presence in 2020. These looks are always present in some way, but periodically, they are energized as a trend. Natural materials, used in simple forms, reinforce a feeling of purity that is at the core of this style.

NATURAL SELECTION

It seems our collective yearning for getting back to nature will extend to home accents. But while the last few years may have included banana-leaf everything, this trend will, once again, manifest in a more subtle way. Think botanical prints, lush greens, and replications of wood grains and stone veinings for pillows, rugs, and upholstery, along with delicate wild flora and fauna motifs in homewares, experts say.
